Meet Jane

Jane was a group of women in Chicago whose mission was to provide women with safe abortion services regardless of age, race, social status or financial ability during a time when abortion was illegal in the United States. From 1969 to 1973, this underground service helped nearly 12,000 women gain access to abortions, counseling and reproductive care. The organization began with one woman, Heather Booth, who, in 1965, helped a friend's desperate sister find an abortion provider. In its four years of operation, the group grew to approximately 125 women. Officially known as the Abortion Counseling Service of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, the coalition was more popularly referred to as the “Jane Collective”, or just merely “Jane".
